If you are searching for a Help Scout alternative, the usual reasons are price per user, the gap between the free plan and Standard, or the fact that AI Answers is billed per resolution on top of the seat fee. We built Helpdesky as the smaller, flatter, friendlier option.
Why people switch from Help Scout
The patterns we see:
- Per user pricing at $25, $45 and $75 a user a month. A five person team on Plus is $225 a month. See Help Scout pricing.
- The free plan caps at 5 users, 1 inbox and 1 docs site, which is fine until you want a second knowledge base or a slightly bigger team.
- AI Answers is billed at $0.75 per resolution on top of the seat fee, which can stack up.
- Custom domains and serious branding live on the higher tiers.
If you mostly need a help center, a widget and a clean way to manage email and tickets, Help Scout often charges more than that job is worth.
Helpdesky at a glance
Helpdesky bundles a help center, embeddable widget, contact form and async ticket center, with unlimited seats on every plan.
- Free, $0 a month, 1 helpdesk, 2 articles, 10 conversations
- Pro, $9 a month, 50 articles, 150 conversations, custom domain
- Ultimate, $29 a month, 3 helpdesks, unlimited articles and conversations
Five users on Help Scout Plus is $225 a month. Five users on Helpdesky Pro is $9. Full numbers on Helpdesky pricing.
Side by side: Helpdesky vs Help Scout
Pricing
Help Scout charges per user. Helpdesky charges per workspace, with unlimited seats at every tier. Add staff freely without watching the bill.
AI search
Helpdesky's AI search uses semantic RAG over your help center, included on every plan with no per resolution fee. Help Scout's AI Answers is genuinely good for autoresolution, but at $0.75 a resolution the cost is variable and grows with your traffic.
Custom domains
Every Helpdesky plan supports custom domains through Cloudflare for SaaS. Your docs site can live at help.yourbrand.com from day one. See Setting Up a Custom Domain. Help Scout's custom domain support sits on the paid tiers.
Contact form
Helpdesky has an embeddable contact form you drop into any page. It posts into the same inbox as your widget messages and emails. Help Scout has Beacon for chat plus contact, which works well but is more product than form.
Ticket center
Helpdesky's ticket center is an embeddable customer portal where signed in users see all their open and closed conversations. It is on every plan. Help Scout's customer portal is part of Beacon and is good, though deeper portal experiences require the higher tiers.
No plugins
Helpdesky has no marketplace. Everything ships in the base product. Help Scout has a clean app catalog, but several "obvious" capabilities still want a paid integration or a higher plan.
Many customisations
Helpdesky lets you set logo, favicon, brand colour, light or dark theme, and pick between two help center layouts. The widget is themable end to end. See Customising Your Widget. Help Scout's branding is solid but the look and feel is somewhat fixed.
Email forwarding
Each Helpdesky helpdesk gets an inbound address like yourslug-123456@inbox.helpdesky.io. Forward your existing support@ and emails turn into threaded conversations. Read Email Forwarding Setup. Help Scout's email handling is one of its real strengths, no argument there.
Widget with helpdesk and AI help
The Helpdesky widget combines instant article search, AI answers, quick questions, in widget article reading and a messaging tab. One snippet, one setup. See Adding the Widget to Your Site.
When Help Scout might still be the right fit
Help Scout has spent years polishing its shared inbox. If your day to day is heavy email triage with tags, saved replies, internal notes and Salesforce or HubSpot integrations, and you have the budget, Help Scout is a beautifully built product. We respect it, we just think it is overkill for teams that mostly need a help center, a widget and a basic ticketing flow.
Get started with Helpdesky
For most teams in the small to mid range, Helpdesky covers the same ground for a fraction of the cost. Create your Helpdesky, point a custom domain, drop the widget on your site and you are live in an afternoon.
