Categories help you organize articles into logical groups, making it easy for customers to find what they need.
Creating a Category
- Open Help Center > Categories from the dashboard navigation (use the menu button on smaller screens)
- Click New Category
- Enter a name and optional description
- Choose an icon from the available options
- Click Create
The category immediately appears on your public help center.
Enter a name, add a useful description, choose an icon, then click Create.
Choosing Icons
Each category can have an icon next to its name. Open the Icon dropdown in the New Category or edit dialog and select one of the available options: Folder, Document, Book, Lightbulb, Help, Settings, Zap, or Users.
Choose an icon that fits the category’s purpose, such as Book for guides or Settings for configuration topics.
Choose an icon from the dropdown; you do not need to type an icon name.
Reordering Categories
Categories appear on your public help center in a specific order. To change the display order:
- Go to the Categories page in the dashboard
- Use the dotted drag handle at the left of a category row to drag and drop it into your preferred order
- The new order saves automatically
The order you set is reflected immediately on your public help center.
Use the left handles to reorder categories and the pencil buttons to edit them.
Editing and Deleting
- Click the pencil button on a category row to edit its name, description, or icon
- The trash button opens the deletion flow. Review the confirmation before proceeding
Before deleting a category, move any articles you want to keep into another category using the article editor. Check the deletion confirmation carefully before continuing.
How Categories Appear Publicly
How categories appear depends on your help center’s layout. In the Default layout, category cards on the home page show:
- The category icon
- The category name
- The description
- The number of published articles it contains
Customers can click a category to see all articles within it.
In a documentation layout, categories also organize the article navigation. See Themes, Colors, and Appearance for layout options.
