If you are searching for a Tawk.to alternative, you have probably outgrown the free chat widget. Tawk.to is genuinely free forever, which is great, but the moment you need to remove the "powered by tawk.to" badge, run AI on your knowledge base or look professional to enterprise prospects, you start paying anyway, in add ons and in time spent.
We built Helpdesky as the next step up that does not jump to $50 a month per seat.
Why people switch from Tawk.to
The honest list:
- Branding removal is a paid add on at around $19 a month, on top of an otherwise free product. See Tawk.to pricing.
- AI Assist is billed via credits, separately from the rest of the product.
- The hosted knowledge base is functional but feels dated next to modern docs sites.
- For larger teams, the Hire Agents service starts at $1+ an hour, which is a different product entirely.
- The widget UI is recognisably Tawk.to, even after theming.
If you want a small jump in polish without a big jump in price, that is the sweet spot we sit in.
Helpdesky at a glance
Helpdesky is a help center, embeddable widget, contact form and async ticket center in one product, with unlimited seats.
- Free, $0 a month, 1 helpdesk, 2 articles, 10 conversations
- Pro, $9 a month, 50 articles, 150 conversations, branding removed, custom domain
- Ultimate, $29 a month, 3 helpdesks, unlimited articles and conversations
Pro is around half the price of Tawk.to's branding removal add on, with a real help center, AI search and a ticket portal included. See Helpdesky pricing.
Side by side: Helpdesky vs Tawk.to
Pricing
Tawk.to is free with paid add ons. Helpdesky has a free tier and a single $9 a month upgrade. For most small teams the math comes out close, but you get a much more modern stack with Helpdesky once you cross the free line.
AI search
Helpdesky uses semantic RAG search across your articles, on every plan. Visitors can ask in natural language and get an answer with citations. Tawk.to has AI Assist, but it is credit billed and primarily aimed at agent suggestions inside chats.
Custom domains
Every Helpdesky plan supports custom domains through Cloudflare for SaaS. Your help center lives at help.yourbrand.com with SSL handled for you. See Setting Up a Custom Domain. Tawk.to's hosted knowledge base lives on a Tawk subdomain unless you put your own front end on top.
Contact form
Helpdesky's contact form is a clean drop in embed that posts into your inbox. Tawk.to's offline form is fine, though more chat oriented.
Ticket center
Helpdesky's ticket center is a hosted customer portal where signed in users see all their conversations in one place. Tawk.to's ticketing is built into the chat product but does not give end customers a real signed in portal experience.
No plugins
Helpdesky has no marketplace. Everything ships in the base product. Tawk.to is similar in spirit, but the moment you want polished branding, AI or paid add ons, you are stitching pieces together.
Many customisations
Helpdesky lets you set logo, favicon, brand colour, light or dark theme, and a choice of two help center layouts. The widget is themable end to end. See Customising Your Widget. Tawk.to's widget customisation is decent but harder to make look fully off the shelf.
Email forwarding
Each Helpdesky helpdesk gets an inbound address like yourslug-123456@inbox.helpdesky.io. Forward your existing support@ inbox and emails become threaded conversations. See Email Forwarding Setup. Tawk.to has email channels but the threading and inbox UX feel older.
Widget with helpdesk and AI help
The Helpdesky widget combines instant article search, AI answers, quick questions, in widget article reading and a messaging tab. See Adding the Widget to Your Site.
When Tawk.to might still be the right fit
If your support volume is tiny and unpredictable, you are fine with the Tawk branding, and you mostly want a free place for visitors to ping you, Tawk.to is hard to beat at zero dollars. Same if you genuinely want their Hire Agents service. We are not pretending Tawk.to has no place. It just is not a fit for teams that want a polished, branded help center with modern AI search.
